Foundation Year - History

Along with the establishment of the Harokopio University in 1991, the Central Library of the institution, which operates as an independent decentralized service at level of Division, is also founded. In 1995 the Library and Information Centre begins the scientific organization of its material in accordance with the international librarianship rules and standards.

The Library and Information Centre is aimed at all members of the academia of Harokopio University and any other member of the broader Greek and international scientific community as well as at any citizen interested in using its collections.

Foundation Year - History

The Bank of Greece’s Library was founded in 1931 and is one of the most important economic libraries in the country. It is a part of the Centre for Culture, Research and Documentation and is housed in the Bank’s Head Office. Its mission is the acquisition and dissemination of the essential information resources, in order to support the research body of work of the Bank, as well as information queries from external patrons.

Foundation Year - History

The Library of Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP) operates since 2002 and maintains the library collections of major Greek banks, which are absorbed by Piraeus Bank.

Who can access the Library

The library of PIOP is open to the public and there is reading hall on the ground floor of the building. The Library serves the users not only at the reading room, but also via new technologies. Loaning is allowed only for the staff of Piraeus Bank Group and the process depends on the material type. Books are loaned for fifteen days, while magazines and reference books –dictionaries, encyclopaedias and other reference books- cannot be loaned. Special collections have a different loaning policy depending on the item’s condition.

Specialized subject areas

The Library possesses titles relating to the fields of research and action of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation, but also of the Piraeus Bank Group. It covers topics of industrial archaeology, economic and social history, history of technology, geotechnical and environmental issues, museology, cultural management, anthropology, folklore, ethnology, as well as financial, banking and economic subjects, agricultural economy and policy.

Collections

The Library consists of the main book collection, the collection of magazines and special collections. The collections are divided into those that are accessible via the integrated library management system and those that are only accessible through Library’s Card Catalogue.

The collection is increased by the Library’s annual budget, donations from other institutions, organizations and individuals, as well as material from Piraeus Bank Group.

There are special collections, which include material from the late 19th century.

Services

The Reading room has six (6) places for the public and it operates during the library schedule, from Monday to Friday 9:00 – 16:00. There are also two workstations for the users and there is internet access (Wi-Fi).

PIOP Library has also Children’s Department, where the educational programs of PIOP are implemented and book exhibitions, book reviews, as well as educational activities in collaboration with other stakeholders are also taken place.

Special Collections & Services

In the electronic databases of the Library, primary data are collected from the results of research projects that are supported and coordinated by PIOP.

Although the library is non-lending for the public, interlibrary loan services are available for H.E.LI.N. members.

Foundation Year - History

The Library of Economic Studies was first mentioned in the 1932 University of Athens yearbook and according to records was co-founded by the Professor of the department Mr. Xenophon Zolotas. Since 1997 the Library has been situated at the Neo Himio building.

The Library provides information resources for the Departments staff, students and visitors undertaking research on similar subject areas.

Foundation Year - History

The library was founded in 1949 as a study room. Since then, it has widened its aims and activities. The library's purpose is to support and promote the educational and research goals of the University of Piraeus. It also supports the continued development and expansion of the objectives of the University's community as well as the social role of the University of Piraeus.

Who can access the Library

The library is for the faculty, researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, and university staff, as well as for external partners of the University's members, libraries, and the general public.

  • General information: related to the library and its collections and equipment, including rules for borrowing, making photocopies, the use of audio-visual material, locations of items, etc.

  • Specialized information: users can submit specific research questions, which are handled by the librarians in the relevant department, by email, by telephone or in person.

  • Access to sources and materials: photocopying, printing, access to thematic, bibliographic and full text databases.

  • Lending: to members and partners of the university. There is also a service for reserving books and other printed material. All requests are considered in the order in which they are received.

  • Acquisition of material: acquisition of material that is not in the library can be done in two ways. There can be a proposal to enrich the library's collections, or items can be borrowed via interlibrary loans from libraries in Greece or abroad.

  • User training: the library offers seminars to train users on how to use the library, the electronic catalogue, the services and the electronic information sources.

  • Α) European Documentation Center (EDC) (1992-)

  • Β) The library has developed three digital repositories: 1. The Digital Library which constitutes the Institutional Repository of the University of Piraeus: This is where post-graduate and doctoral theses from various departments of the University are stored, indexed, maintained and retrieved in digital format. The theses are accessible through the Internet by all members of the academic community and by the general public. The search for the theses, which are in Acrobat PDF, can be done through a simple request using bibliographic metadata such as title, subject, author, summary, year, etc. The collection includes approximately 4,300 postgraduate and doctoral theses.
    2. The digital repository of the European Documentation Center of Greece (ΚΕΤlib) with European content. This material is produced by scientific and political organizations in Greece which specialize in European and international subjects and topics.
    3. The digital repository for "SPOUDAI - the Journal of Economics and Business" published by the University of Piraeus. The journal has been in publication since 1950 and publishes articles on Economics, Business Administration, Statistics, and Operations Research.
